Current Research

My research focuses on British history in the 19th and 20th centuries, with particular emphasis on Thatcherism, the rise of democracy and the relationship between Britain and Europe. I am especially interested in political history, religious history and the history of ideas, and in the location of British history within an international perspective. I've written extensively on British ideas of French and American democracy, and their influence upon internal policy debates, and I've also written on the impact of continental revolutions on British politics.

At present I have three major research projects in progress:

(1) Rethinking British Democracy: a History of Democratic Thought in Britain
